Day 9: CFB Petawawa and a journey to Quebec

We took a break from enjoying cold Coronas while looking at the beautiful Ottawa River, and Biker took us on a tour of CFB Petawawa, just a short drive from Deep River. We visited the museum there. It is a very large military base, home to more than 5000 military personnel. The facility is surrounded by hundreds of acres of training areas. Jake, Sam and Kate enjoyed investigating the military vehicles outside the museum.

After the visit to CFB Petawawa, we had a picnic, but of course visited the local chip truck before. This one was called "Colborne's Chip Wagon". Again, very tasty chips. Jake and Dad enjoyed theirs with malt vinegar!

Since it was such a beautiful day, we decided to get the canoe out on the water again. This time, Dad and the kids decided to cross the Ottawa River and visit Quebec. There was a beautiful beach and warm water on the other side - just wonderful. There are no pictures here to mark this accomplishment (we didn't want to soak the camera!)

Well, we have rested up and enjoyed Wynn and Bob's wonderful hospitality!!! It has truly been an excellent stay in Deep River and we look forward to popping back in on our return trip. But for now, we have our sights set on Ottawa, Quebec, and then the Maritimes. It should be a memorable trip - it already is! We will keep you posted. Until then...

Also...a trip to the "Beer Store"!

Day 8: Church, chips, and canoes

Sunday in Deep River was beautiful. Being Sunday, we went to the local church, Our Lady of Good Counsel. Jake was happy that the service was short :-) We've found that the people here are very friendly and always willing to strike up a conversation. We were invited for cookies and coffee, but we had our sights set on other things - visiting the local "chip truck". Not being from these parts, we needed to be explained what a chip truck was - basically a truck stationed in one location that serves french fries. We were not disappointed! The chips were delicious and we brought a huge box back for Biker, Wynn, and Carrie.

Since the weather had improved, we decided to take the canoe out and take the boys' skim boards. A short row from the house is Pine Point Beach. Jake and Sam enjoyed trying out their skim boards, and Kate enjoyed playing in the water. If you didn't know any better, you'd thing the Ottawa River was actually a lake! As you peer off across the Ottawa River, you can see Quebec. Perhaps we shall try to canoe across tomorrow???
