Day 7: Takin' it easy in Deep River

It was nice to be able to get up knowing we didn't have 7 or 8 hours of driving ahead of us. We were able to sleep in. Wynn prepared a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. After, Bob gave us a tour of the town. Deep River is a small, quaint town of about 4,200 people, and has all the amenities you could ask for: arena, school, care facilities, hospital, churches, marina, tennis courts, sandy beaches, shopping(but no mega-malls and big-box outlets). We are enjoying our stay. Despite the hot weather back home in BC, the weather here is wet and cold for this time of year (between 15 and 20 degrees today).

In the afternoon, we went to visit Bob's mother, Bessy, at the North Renfrew Long-term care centre, less than 5 minutes away. It's a nice place overlooking the river, and the staff is very nice. Bessy was happy to meet us and we enjoyed our visit with her. We chatted over snacks and the kids enjoyed the pets, particularly the cat and kittens. We are going to pick up Bessy tomorrow to bring her over to the house for dinner. We look forward to a nice evening. Now, if I can just get the kids to church in the morning...

Day 6: Finally in Deep River!

We left Sault Ste. Marie at 9:45 a.m. yesterday morning, continued on past Sudbury, stopping only quickly for washroom breaks and of course, Tim Hortons :-)

Ontario seems to go on...and on...and on... You get the idea. Needless to say, when we saw "Deep River" appear on the distance signs, a smile came to our faces.

Shortly after 5:00 p.m., we pulled into Deep River. Kate and the boys were really well behaved on this leg of the trip, but as can be expected, the boys started to "lose it" near the end. A good sign of this was when they started smelling each others armpits :-0 So, about 2 kilometres from the Robertson homestead in Deep River, we decided to fool the boys by telling them we had arrived. We pulled over, they got out, then we locked the doors and started driving away. I'm sure this sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, but they needed to burn some energy off. Don't worry, we were well off the main highway by this point.

Bob and Wynn were awaiting our arrival and took some photos of our van as we pulled up. We were so happy to see them. The kids immediately ran down to the Ottawa River to play. We enjoyed a wonderful steak dinner and a restful evening. We even watched the Lions steamroll the Roughriders in Saskatchewan. Tomorrow afternoon, we are off to visit Mrs. Bessy Robertson, Bob's mother who lives nearby. We are looking forward to meeting her!!!
